Dynamic adaptive energy management of data centres-prosumers in the power grid.

The DATAFLEX project develops an innovative system for adaptive energy management of data centres in the power grid — optimising consumption and IT load, connecting to network operators, providing ancillary services, and participating in flexibility programmes.

Data centres as prosumers

A data centre is one of the few large consumers whose load can be shifted deliberately rather than only observed. Compute can be scheduled, deferred or moved, which makes the building a participant in the grid rather than a fixed draw on it — a prosumer, able to offer flexibility back to the network operator.

Turning that into something an operator can rely on is the engineering problem. It needs the IT load and the energy system managed as one, a connection to the operator that carries commitments rather than estimates, and measurement solid enough to settle against.

Moberg joins the project as a partner, alongside an industrial consortium and the University of Zagreb.

Projekt DATAFLEX razvija inovativni sustav prilagodljivog upravljanja energijom podatkovnih centara u elektroenergetskoj mreži — optimiranjem potrošnje i IT opterećenja, povezivanjem s operatorima mreže, pružanjem pomoćnih usluga i sudjelovanjem u programima fleksibilnosti.

Podatkovni centri kao proizvođači-potrošači

Podatkovni centar jedan je od rijetkih velikih potrošača čije se opterećenje može namjerno pomicati, a ne samo promatrati. Računalni se poslovi mogu rasporediti, odgoditi ili premjestiti, što zgradu čini sudionikom u mreži umjesto nepromjenjivim opterećenjem — proizvođačem-potrošačem koji mreži može ponuditi fleksibilnost.

Pretvoriti to u nešto na što se operator može osloniti inženjerski je izazov. Traži da se IT opterećenje i energetski sustav vode kao jedna cjelina, vezu s operatorom koja nosi obveze, a ne procjene, te mjerenja dovoljno pouzdana da se po njima obračunava.
